Sorry it’s been crickets here on the blog for a little while. We were busy sniffing books, contemplating gravity, observing our mid-digit hair and weighing our souls, of course. Also, Robert’s been gone, trying to stop the lethal flow of Mountain Dew to the Large Hadron Collider. I kid. That gentleman who says he’s from the future and was picked up rooting around the Big Bang machine isn’t Robert at all. Does Robert wear “rather too much tweed for his age”

? Nope. Is he from a “communist chocolate hellhole”? Not that I know of.
Back to book sniffing for a second though, although paint sniffing might be a more appropriate topic this morning, seeing as our HowStuffWorks digs are getting spiffed up with some new paint and carpet. I only bring it up, dear reader and listener, because these renovations will ultimately benefit you. Have you ever heard one of your favorite Stuff podcasts marred by the sound of an aggressive high heel clacking down the hall? Probably not, actually, because our video editors are so darned good. And now, thanks to what looks to be a short, tufted, brown-and-green carpet that’s tough to roll your chair over (according to at least one of the lucky office folks), that prospect won’t loom its loud head again.
I much prefer sniffing books over paint though. And so, it seems, do a lot of listeners. Brigit wrote in to relay a story about an intense Stephen King phase she went through at the tender young age of 12 in which the brand-new King novel she’d gotten fresh from the library stank of smoke, thanks to being No. 2 on her library’s waiting list. Oddly enough, the stink eventually grew to enhance her devouring of the book, making it a “multi-sensory experience.” Lest you think this is a small community, it’s not. There are whole book-sniffing enthusiast sites, albeit meant as a joke. A tip from one such site recommends breathing deep into the spine of the book with the aid of a straw.
Scientists however, like to smell books for more than just the flood of olfactory-triggered memories. They’re in it to figure out the condition of a book. And this was the focus of one of this week’s podcasts. Cristen Conger covered this for Discovery News in the excellently titled story “Old Books Gassier With Age.” And Robert posted about it on the blogs a while back. What can I say? We like to sniff stuff at HowStuffWorks. Even the TechStuff guys do it, although they’re more inclined to talk about packet sniffing than the book variety.
Long live smelly books. Libraries. And iTunes. Speaking of which, why don’t you head over there and give Stuff from the Science Lab a listen.

, boyish figure, they look spectacular: Think goddess with just enough tomboyish appeal to avoid appearing unapproachable. However, if you have ample curves and a short frame, skinny jeans are like a denim sign pointing out your figure shortcomings.
Wherever your figure lands on the scale of awe-inspiring or awful in skinny jeans, choosing the right accessories is the key to enhancing — or camouflaging — your attributes. You probably already know that a figure flattering top can soften your look and draw attention away from your hipline or thighs. What you may not know is that the under-sung superstar of skinny jean accessories is the right pair of shoes. You should sing their praises loud and long. The right shoes do something structurally important after you slide, stuff and cram your way into a pair of skinny jeans. They help create balance. Whether you’re tall and willowy or short and curvaceous, an inspired shoe choice will make skinny jeans look like they’re the right choice for you.
Skinny jeans never stay out of fashion very long, so having a reliable strategy for dealing with the look can save you from walking around in camouflage gear while explaining to your main squeeze that you aren’t wearing sexy jeans because you have a rash — or an allergy to denim — or an irrational fear of rivets (or useless pockets).
Let’s take a look at some shoe styles that rock a pair of skinny jeans. There are bound to be a couple of options you haven’t considered that’ll make you glad you invested in a pedicure.

1930-1939 Cadillac

Had it not been part of General Motors, Cadillac might have perished in the Depression, a time when few could afford — or wanted to be seen in — big, expensive automobiles no matter how superb.
Unlike independent Packard, which was forced to survive with medium-priced products, Cadillac was protected by GM’s vast size and enormous financial strength. Then, too, the division already had a medium-priced car, the LaSalle, introduced in 1927. All this helped Cadillac endure “hard times” without squandering its blue-chip image, even as it built ultra-luxury cars selling only in small numbers.
Foremost among them was that magnificent 1930 surprise, the Sixteen

, carrying an overhead-valve, 452-cubic-inch V-16 engine producing 165 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque. Horsepower was increased to 185 in 1934.
An undoubted great in an era of greats, the Sixteen was ostensibly available in 33 different models, submodels or trim variations ranging from a $5,350 two-passenger roadster to a $9,700 town brougham. Keep in mind those prices bought a very nice home in the Depression years.
The typical Cadillac Sixteen could return about eight miles to a 15-cent gallon of gas and 150 miles to a quart of oil. It could also cruise at 70 and top 90 mph. But brute performance wasn’t its forte. Rather, the Sixteen was intended to elevate Cadillac into the rarefied realm of Packard, Peerless, and Pierce-Arrow, still the three giants of American motoring. That it did, offering superb luxury and smooth, effortless power with minimal shifting. Cadillac advertised the Sixteen’s performance as “a continuous flow…constantly at full-volume efficiency…flexible…instantly responsive.”
The Sixteen was only nine months old when Cadillac introduced another multicylinder engine, a 368-cubic-inch V-12. Essentially a V-16 with four fewer cylinders, it delivered 135 horsepower and 285 pound-feet of torque. The cars it powered also weren’t quite as large the Sixteens, riding the Cadillac Eight’s 140-inch wheelbase instead of an enormous 148-inch span.
Predictably, the Twelve also wasn’t as fast, but its free-revving engine was renowned for smooth, even power. And that power was quite ample. A roadster could do about 85 mph with standard rear-axle ratio, and most Twelves could cruise all day at 70. Of course, the Twelve was cheaper than the Sixteen, by far, offered with 11 body choices in the $3,795-$4,985 range.
But despite their refined performance and majestic proportions, the multicylinder Cadillacs were anachronisms in the devastated Depression market, and none sold in significant numbers. The peak was 1930-31 with exactly 3,250 Sixteens and 5,725 Twelves.
Production was only fair for ’32, then declined to about 700 and 400 units per year, respectively. Both models were dropped after 1937, but Cadillac made one more try starting the next year with an L-head V-16. At 431 cid and 185 horsepower, this engine was smaller and lighter yet more potent than the earlier overhead-valve design, but only 508 cars were so equipped through 1940, its final year.
There were two reasons why these grand Cadillacs fared so poorly. As noted, super-expensive cars with more than eight cylinders seemed socially inappropriate to many people in the early ’30s. After their initial sales spurt, these models were shunned by most customers for the cheaper, less showy, but by no means inferior Cadillac Eights.
Later, the big engines were simply outmoded by advancing technology. The introduction of precision-insert connecting-rod bearings helped eliminate knock and high-speed wear in engines with fewer than 12 cylinders, so there was little reason for Cadillac buyers to choose a Twelve or Sixteen over an Eight.
We’ll cover Cadillac’s V-8 offerings in more detail on the next page.

Can You Walk If Your Big Toe Is Broken?

Your big toe plays a major role in positioning your foot and maintaining your balance. This is why you really don’t appreciate its contribution until you injure it. Walking on a broken toe hurts every time your body engages it, which is why those who must walk on a broken tie are better off taking some protective measures.
Pain, swelling or stiffness, especially when walking, are the primary symptoms of a broken toe. However, these are also the primary symptoms of a sprained or jammed toe. Unless the break is severe enough to mis-shape your toe, the only way to tell the difference between a break and a sprain is through X-ray imaging. Fortunately, the treatment for all three injuries is nearly identical.
Medical treatment for a broken to focuses on minimizing pain and swelling, and on preventing further injury to your toe. Symptom reduction includes pain medication, anti-inflammatories and regular icing. To prevent further injury, “buddy taping” — taping the big toe to its neighbor – is a common fix for minor breaks and fractures. A serious break, the kind that results in a misshapen toe, might be put in a cast or splinted to help to restore natural shape.
One recurring problem with a broken big toe is that it will droop below the line of the other toes on your foot. This droop also puts it below the level you are accustomed to. This means that as you walk, your big toe is at risk of being stubbed and reinjured

. Although this is true of all toes, it’s especially a problem for big toes because of their larger size and greater involvement in stabilizing your foot.
Put simply, yes….but you probably won’t want to. Between the pain and risk of reinjury, walking with a broken big toe will literally be a pain. If you must walk with a broken big toe, you should buddy-tape it to its neighbor and wear closed-toe shoes for added protection. If you have access to a cane or walking stick, using it can help protect your big toe from becoming too involved in helping balance and stabilize yourself as you walk.

How to Walk After a Hip Replacement

A hip replacement is major surgery in which your eroded or otherwise damaged hip joint is replaced with a synthetic ball and socket. Arthritis is a common cause for hip damage that leads to total joint replacement. Walking after a hip replacement is painful and difficult at first, but will get easier as you recover.
Begin walking as soon as you are cleared to do so by your surgeon, probably in the first day or two after surgery. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons–AAOS–explains that getting back on your feet at an early stage in recovery helps your hip muscles recover from the trauma of surgery. You’ll be aided by a walker and medical personnel during your first attempts to walk post-surgery.
Stand in the middle of your walker with your weight balanced evenly between the two sides of the apparatus. Grasp the walker with both hands–one hand on each side–and move it ahead of you just a little bit. Take a small step with your affected leg; when you step down, make sure your heel hits the floor before the sole of your foot or your toes. Follow with your healthy leg and repeat the process slowly.
Take it easy as you walk after your hip replacement. You’ll be able to move more quickly and put more weight on your healing leg as you recover and gain strength.
Graduate to using a cane or one crutch in place of the walker a few weeks after surgery, according to AAOS. Your doctor will check your progress to see if you can carry your full weight while standing, without leaning on the walker

, before giving the green light for a single crutch. Hold the cane or crutch on your healthy side to lend support to your hip replacement. For example, if your left hip was replaced, use the cane on your right side.
Walk up and down stairs only when there is a bannister to give you support, until you’re fully healed. Walk up the stairs as a child would, placing your good leg on a step and bringing your ailing leg up to meet it. Reverse the process to go downstairs; lead with your healing leg and then bring your good leg down each step.
Continue to use mobility devices to help you walk until your doctor or physical therapist feels you’re ready to walk unassisted. The recovery process can take between 3 and 6 months in some cases, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Muscoloskeletal and Skin Disease

, or NIAMS.
Walk for exercise after you’ve fully recovered from your hip replacement. NIAMS explains that walking is a good workout because it builds up your hip and leg muscles. The low impact level of walking can protect your synthetic joint from injury.
