On Friday night, I met up with friends to celebrate the beginning of a glorious three-day weekend (which I obviously embraced since I’m writing about Friday…on Tuesday). And naturally, I consulted Cosmo to find out what a young woman should be seen in this summer.
Their top pick of 6 summer trends “He’d Love to See You In”? The romper.
These adult onesies made their comeback a couple summers ago, and now Cosmo reports that guys have jumped on the bandwagon and are simply dying to see women dressed up in the one-pieces. I’m skeptical of the claim since a) I couldn’t find you a majority of women, much less men, who adore rompers, and b) I’ve never heard a man express interest rompers aside from the perplexing bathroom mechanics involved with wearing one. Not to mention that we don’t know who these romper-crazy “guys” are who Cosmo supposedly commissioned to tell women what “fun fearless fashion” to wear this July.
Personally, I’m not anti-romper. In fact, I might sport them more often were it not for my long torso, which makes finding one that fits nigh impossible. Andwhy not? You just throw one on and avoid drinking lots of liquids when restrooms are scarce. No outfit creation necessary.
So on Friday, I borrowed a friend’s romper that magically fit, slipped on the requisite Cosmopolitan footwear (aka 4-inch heels) and headed out to a busy bar to see if the outfit would turn me into the man magnet, as the magazine promised. Although the romper was comfy – thank you, pockets! – something was off.
For starters, my shoes kicked me up to over 6 feet 1 inch, which provided a great overhead view of the crowd but I didn’t feel particularly approachable. There’s also something about wearing an outfit that’s “guaranteed” to get men’s attention that guarantees you won’t. Overly aware of what I had put on and the effect it was supposed to have, I couldn’t relax and found myself constantly fidgeting with the romper. Not surprisingly, I went home without giving away a single phone number, e-mail address or perfume-spritzed business card (fact: Cosmo recommends writing your number on a guy’s hand with a waterproof eye pencil).
According to the photo beside Cosmo’s romper recommendation, I was supposed to look like a carefree Blake Lively on her way to some breezy Hollywood soiree. Instead, I probably looked exactly how I felt – like a woman in a bar on a Friday night, waiting to get hit on while wishing she could just go home and change clothes.

Everyday Foot Problems

Feet are like snowflakes: No two are the same — even those on the same body. Your two feet may actually be different shoe sizes! And even if they’re evenly matched, they’ll be different sizes and different shapes at different times in your life, including as your body changes through growth, pregnancy (for women), disease or disability, and aging. Because of these natural irregularities and the changes that every person encounters during life, there are several everyday foot problems that often occur.
One recent study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, found that during puberty — when hormonal changes spur bone developments — the bone density of black girls increases three times more than that of white girls. And when the U.S. Public Health Service conducted a national survey in 1990, it found that blacks experienced 20 percent fewer foot problems overall than whites, although blacks are more likely to suffer from corns, calluses, and flat feet.
Nationality can also influence foot structure: Many Mediterranean people, for instance, have particularly low arches, while many Northern Europeans tend to have high ones. Finally, in some ethnic communities, cultural standards play a role, because they determine what is considered attractive. Members suffer pain from wearing uncomfortable shoes that are simply de rigueur in their cultural world.
One of your best precautions against foot pain is to be aware of both the hereditary factors (which you can’t change) and the lifestyle and life-stage factors (which you can change or, at least, influence) that determine whether your feet are healthy or hurting.

The increased pressure seen in the diabetic foot is often due to decreased ankle motion at the Achilles tendon. This tendon becomes stiff because consistently high blood sugar levels lead to the deposition of sugar elements on the tendon.
Often, long-term elevated blood sugar levels, seen in those with poorly controlled diabetes, lead to circulation and nerve problems. The nerve problems lead to decreased sensation in the foot. The patient often doesn’t even know that a sore is present. The circulation problems cause the wound to heal poorly.
Infection is a common and major complication of diabetic foot wounds. Infection leads to tissue death and progressive gangrene. Massive infection is the most common factor leading to amputation.
A large number of diabetics with persistent and untreated foot ulcers will have their lower limb amputated, so this is a very serious condition! In fact, in the U.S, diabetes is responsible for about 60% of leg amputations that are not caused by accidents. In 2002, about 82,000 lower limb amputations were done in people with diabetes.
Progressive debridement (removal of dead/infected tissue) or surgery to reconnect the blood supply can sometimes help ulcers heal. But the best way to avoid this problem is to prevent it from happening in the first place.
