New York Times’ First (and Feminist) Female Reporter
On Friday night, I met up with friends to celebrate the beginning of a glorious three-day weekend (which I obviously embraced since I’m writing about Friday…on Tuesday). And naturally, I consulted Cosmo to find out what a young woman should be seen in this summer.
Their top pick of 6 summer trends “He’d Love to See You In”? The romper.
These adult onesies made their comeback a couple summers ago, and now Cosmo reports that guys have jumped on the bandwagon and are simply dying to see women dressed up in the one-pieces. I’m skeptical of the claim since a) I couldn’t find you a majority of women, much less men, who adore rompers, and b) I’ve never heard a man express interest rompers aside from the perplexing bathroom mechanics involved with wearing one. Not to mention that we don’t know who these romper-crazy “guys” are who Cosmo supposedly commissioned to tell women what “fun fearless fashion” to wear this July.
Personally, I’m not anti-romper. In fact, I might sport them more often were it not for my long torso, which makes finding one that fits nigh impossible. Andwhy not? You just throw one on and avoid drinking lots of liquids when restrooms are scarce. No outfit creation necessary.
So on Friday, I borrowed a friend’s romper that magically fit, slipped on the requisite Cosmopolitan footwear (aka 4-inch heels) and headed out to a busy bar to see if the outfit would turn me into the man magnet, as the magazine promised. Although the romper was comfy – thank you, pockets! – something was off.
For starters, my shoes kicked me up to over 6 feet 1 inch, which provided a great overhead view of the crowd but I didn’t feel particularly approachable. There’s also something about wearing an outfit that’s “guaranteed” to get men’s attention that guarantees you won’t. Overly aware of what I had put on and the effect it was supposed to have, I couldn’t relax and found myself constantly fidgeting with the romper. Not surprisingly, I went home without giving away a single phone number, e-mail address or perfume-spritzed business card (fact: Cosmo recommends writing your number on a guy’s hand with a waterproof eye pencil).
According to the photo beside Cosmo’s romper recommendation, I was supposed to look like a carefree Blake Lively on her way to some breezy Hollywood soiree. Instead, I probably looked exactly how I felt – like a woman in a bar on a Friday night, waiting to get hit on while wishing she could just go home and change clothes.

Colored Jean Trends and Faux Pas

You know a trend has hit cosmic status when celebrities start embracing it. And when Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, appeared at an impromptu field hockey game in a pair of coral-colored jeans, sales went through the roof.
After a lifetime of regular blue denim washes, though, the thought of colored jeans can be daunting. Don’t be intimidated. You won’t look like a glow stick or a piece of candy. You just need to know the do’s and the don’ts of the trend.
Do:
Don’t:
Some popular colors for jeans are coral, different shades of blues, mustard, orange, purple and green

Diabetes and Foot Ulcers

Medical expert Dr. Mohan S. Palaniswami answers common questions about diabetes:
Q: What are the risks of developing foot ulcers due to diabetes?
A: Foot ulcers occur in diabetics due to repetitive stress on the foot. Ulcers develop after calluses form on areas of increased pressure

, such as the ball and heel of the foot, or on abnormal bony prominences.
The increased pressure seen in the diabetic foot is often due to decreased ankle motion at the Achilles tendon. This tendon becomes stiff because consistently high blood sugar levels lead to the deposition of sugar elements on the tendon.
Often, long-term elevated blood sugar levels, seen in those with poorly controlled diabetes, lead to circulation and nerve problems. The nerve problems lead to decreased sensation in the foot. The patient often doesn’t even know that a sore is present. The circulation problems cause the wound to heal poorly.
Infection is a common and major complication of diabetic foot wounds. Infection leads to tissue death and progressive gangrene. Massive infection is the most common factor leading to amputation.
A large number of diabetics with persistent and untreated foot ulcers will have their lower limb amputated, so this is a very serious condition! In fact, in the U.S, diabetes is responsible for about 60% of leg amputations that are not caused by accidents. In 2002, about 82,000 lower limb amputations were done in people with diabetes.
Progressive debridement (removal of dead/infected tissue) or surgery to reconnect the blood supply can sometimes help ulcers heal. But the best way to avoid this problem is to prevent it from happening in the first place.
To help prevent diabetic foot ulcers, monitor your blood sugar levels closely with the assistance of your physician and pay close attention to the health of your feet

New York Times’ First (and Feminist) Female Reporter
Taking (yet another) cue from Jamie Keiles, whose Seventeen Magazine Project, prompted my little foray into Cosmoland, I wanted to see what types of products are advertised in its pages. This breakdown doesn’t include all of the advertorial items included in the what-to-wear, how-to-be-beautiful sections, but rather the actual ad spots.
As expected, there’s a major emphasis on beauty aids and skincare. That rang true in Seventeen as well, with Keiles’ ad analysis finding 80 percent focused on beauty aids and health/hygiene. By the time girls grow up into Cosmo women, they’re already conditioned to think that they’re face and skin could probably use some touchups. Moreover, what Seventeen readers lose in ads for educational products (8 percent of Seventeen ads), they make up for in booze billboards (8 percent of Cosmo ads).
But there are also a few categories I included that caught my attention. Namely, the amount of razors, depilatory creams and laser hair removal promotions throughout the pages. In fact, there were almost as many hair remover type ads (10 percent) as there were hair care — shampoo, mousse, etc — ads (17 percent). Molly and I frequently get emails from Stuff Mom Never Told You listeners requesting podcast on why women shave their legs and why we’re culturally obsessed with women being as hairless as possible (which we’ve covered, if you’d like to take a listen). This advertising trend speaks directly to that conundrum. Society tells us to have full, lustrous locks up top, but don’t even think about letting a single follicle grow freely below the scalp! And this is the data to prove it.
I was also interested to see the lack apparel advertising. Perhaps clothing and shoe companies save their marketing dollars for more fashion-y titles, but I’d venture that there’s a deeper message at work here as well. When you flip through the magazine and just look at the ads, all you see over and over again are close-ups on women’s faces and shiny, hairless bare skin. Considering that skincare and hair-related ads (47 percent combined) outranked those for cosmetics (11 percent), Cosmopolitan’s advertising emphasis is incredibly body conscious. Don’t have that flawless skin and shapely gams? Too bad. All the makeup and clothing in the world really isn’t going to fix that, now will it? Swirling around that exposed flesh, we have diet friendly food offerings (17 percent), cellulite cures (5 percent) and even eyelash extenders to fix those “trouble spots.”
Big surprise then

Guide to Finding the Best Shoes for Skinny Jeans

, boyish figure, they look spectacular: Think goddess with just enough tomboyish appeal to avoid appearing unapproachable. However, if you have ample curves and a short frame, skinny jeans are like a denim sign pointing out your figure shortcomings.
Wherever your figure lands on the scale of awe-inspiring or awful in skinny jeans, choosing the right accessories is the key to enhancing — or camouflaging — your attributes. You probably already know that a figure flattering top can soften your look and draw attention away from your hipline or thighs. What you may not know is that the under-sung superstar of skinny jean accessories is the right pair of shoes. You should sing their praises loud and long. The right shoes do something structurally important after you slide, stuff and cram your way into a pair of skinny jeans. They help create balance. Whether you’re tall and willowy or short and curvaceous, an inspired shoe choice will make skinny jeans look like they’re the right choice for you.
Skinny jeans never stay out of fashion very long, so having a reliable strategy for dealing with the look can save you from walking around in camouflage gear while explaining to your main squeeze that you aren’t wearing sexy jeans because you have a rash — or an allergy to denim — or an irrational fear of rivets (or useless pockets).
Let’s take a look at some shoe styles that rock a pair of skinny jeans. There are bound to be a couple of options you haven’t considered that’ll make you glad you invested in a pedicure.

Do you suffer from fashion transference?

During my daughter¡¯s Music Together class, I looked around the room and noticed that not one mother (or grandmother, nanny or father) was better dressed than their child. One little girl had a funky wrap-style dress, matching socks, ballet flats and adorable matching barrettes in her hair. Her mother had on jeans and a wrinkly tee-shirt, like most of the parents present.
Erin Blakely, who¡¯s experienced similar dress comparisons in her child¡¯s music class, asks in her Babble.com essay “The Grit and the Glamour”: ¡°Why are we dressing our girls ¡ª who will spend the day running and jumping and splashing through puddles ¡ª for a night on the town, and ourselves for, well, a day at the playground?¡±
One reason Blakely gives is that the children¡¯s clothing, especially girls clothing, has became way mature. You can find UGG boots and SEVEN jeans for your toddler, not to mention suede pants and string bikinis. ¡°So dressing like mom has never been more possible

,¡± writes Blakely. ¡°Or rather, like mom would dress ¡ª if she wasn’t wearing sweatpants.¡±
I could not agree with her more. The clothing for little girls is IRRESISTABLE these days. And if you¡¯re shopping at Target, inexpensive as well (not so much at Oilily, my mom¡¯s favorite store). How could I say no to a $4 halter top and a $6 jean mini-skirt? I almost feel bad for my friends who have boys.
And the truth is — I never thought I¡¯d be this into dressing my daughter. I tried to steer clear of all the pink out there, but realized it¡¯s almost impossible. I will never, I had thought, dress my daughter to look older than her age. But, when my sister sent me a box of her daughter¡¯s clothing and there was a black faux leather mini-skirt – I could not resist! For Christmas last year she wore a pink cashmere sweater, the skirt, black tights and black shoes (all hand-me downs) – and several people who saw photos of this outfit commented that it looked like something I¡¯d wear, but with boots. Or rather, an outfit I would wear before? her.
So maybe a leather skirt was a little advanced for a two-year old, but truth is¡ that¡¯s how toddlers dress these days.
Ok, so we moms are dressing our daughters like we¡¯d like to dress – or how we used to dress before we had them

. But will we ever return to our dressing glory days? Blakely offers one explanation of why we¡¯ve comfortably settled into dressing like we did in college: ¡°While kids’ fashion has matured, adult styles have regressed, as schlubby adult clothing has moved out of our closets and into the realm of socially acceptable streetwear. Blue jeans and T-shirts have become allowable in all but the most conservative of workplaces.¡±
Granted there are practical reasons fordressing down when you¡¯re hanging with your kids. My daughter¡¯s maple syrup handprint on my jeans this morning is one. But does that justify my scraggly hair and scuffed clogs?
Blakely puts it so well: ¡°I shudder at the thought of giving up my beat-up running sneakers and track pants. But perhaps a swipe of the mascara brush and a pair of dress flats might not be the worst thing in the world. Because if we continue to abdicate the part of ourselves that we lose in parenting ¡ª the free time to groom ourselves, to dress ourselves, to care as much about our own appearance as we do about that of our children ¡ª will we be able to get it back? Is there any guarantee, when our kids are older and dressing themselves, that we will return to the women we used to be?¡±
I used to be more fashionable¡when I lived in New York and worked in an office. Maybe I should try to add a little New York to my wardrobe and less Colorado?
Do you dress your child better than yourself?
