Why There’s No Shame in Shopping Consignment

The title of this article really says it all. There’s no shame in shopping consignment — in fact, it should be embraced. The downturn of the economy has been tough on everyone, and most of us are looking for creative ways to stretch our dollars. Expanding your wardrobe might not be as high on your priority list as putting dinner on the table, but if you’re a fashionista on a budget, shopping consignment for discounted brand-name clothing might be the answer to all your style woes.
So what exactly is a consignment store? It’s a shop that sells secondhand merchandise at a discounted rate. But consignment shops shouldn’t be confused with thrift stores. Thrift stores sell donated items, and nothing is given back to the person who donates, except maybe a tax deduction. Consignment stores actually split their profits with the people who bring in the items. So

, yes, the goods are still used, but they’re usually in much better condition than what you’d find thrifting because the owners of the store only take in a percentage of the sale, so they need to get the highest possible price on everything they sell. Of course, the highest possible price is still a good bit less expensive than what you’ll find at malls and department stores. Best of all, most consignment shops will not accept clothing that is ripped, stained or in poor shape and will only sell brand-name items that are currently in style.
Shopping consignment for clothing that you’ll only wear once is also a smart way to save a penny. Items such as wedding dresses, tuxes or formal wear can be extremely expensive at retail, but you can get them at a great discounted rate in a consignment store. Don’t forget about maternity wear, too! Why spend more than you have to for clothes that you’ll only wear for a short time?
Also, consignment stores offer more than just clothes. With the money you save on your outfit, you can get shoes, handbags or jewelry to complete your look. Heck, some consignment shops sell furniture, and many antique stores work on consignment.
If you want even more bang for your buck, try selling your own gently used items to your favorite consignment shop. It’s a great way to get rid of clothes or accessories you no longer wear and make some money at the same time

! Just be sure the items you take in are clean, stain-free and in good condition. Stores will give you anywhere from 20 to 50 percent of the sale price of your items (depending on the store and what they’re looking for).
Shopping consignment is a great way to save money and stay fashionable. And if you’re sick of last season’s duds (or several pieces of furniture), take them in to make a little extra cash. Just because you’re pinching your pennies doesn’t mean you’re stuck wearing tired clothes. With consignment shopping, you can be a diva on a budget!

Guys nervous about asking a woman on a date can increase their chances of a “sure, OK, fine, why not?” by popping the question (not that question, mind you) in the presence of flowers. According to research by French psychologist Nicolas Guegen, flowers work wonders on women’s moods, causing us act friendlier and smile more. Even in a laboratory setting, blooms appear to have a romantically enlivening effect on (heterosexual) women, who, in a study Guegen conducted in 2011, found men in videos more attractive and more willing to accept a hypothetical date when flowers were in the room.
In a follow-up study, Guegen first asked a group of female students to scope out a mall and select a few stores “for when they appreciated the products displayed in the windows,” and they chose a cake shop, shoe shop and flower shop

. Then, he arranged for five 20-year-old guys to hang out at the mall around those three locations and approach 600 different women and ask for their phone number. Oh la la!

, the monsieurs followed an identical script (which probably sounds a lot sexier in French): “Hello. My name’s Antoine. I just want to say that I think you’re really pretty. I have to go to work this afternoon, and I was wondering if you would give me your phone number. I’ll phone you later and we have a drink together someplace.”
As Guegen suspected, the women responded most favorably when approached in front of the flower shop perhaps because of that botanical magic that apparently renders us romantic. Now, the question is what exactly it is about flowers that may increase our receptiveness and whether this is a cross-cultural phenomenon — although all I can think about now is how those women who handed over their numbers probably spent the rest of the day daydreaming about that mysterious guy Antoine who, alas, is never going to call. C’est la vie.

1930-1939 Cadillac

Had it not been part of General Motors, Cadillac might have perished in the Depression, a time when few could afford — or wanted to be seen in — big, expensive automobiles no matter how superb.
Unlike independent Packard, which was forced to survive with medium-priced products, Cadillac was protected by GM’s vast size and enormous financial strength. Then, too, the division already had a medium-priced car, the LaSalle, introduced in 1927. All this helped Cadillac endure “hard times” without squandering its blue-chip image, even as it built ultra-luxury cars selling only in small numbers.
Foremost among them was that magnificent 1930 surprise, the Sixteen

, carrying an overhead-valve, 452-cubic-inch V-16 engine producing 165 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque. Horsepower was increased to 185 in 1934.
An undoubted great in an era of greats, the Sixteen was ostensibly available in 33 different models, submodels or trim variations ranging from a $5,350 two-passenger roadster to a $9,700 town brougham. Keep in mind those prices bought a very nice home in the Depression years.
The typical Cadillac Sixteen could return about eight miles to a 15-cent gallon of gas and 150 miles to a quart of oil. It could also cruise at 70 and top 90 mph. But brute performance wasn’t its forte. Rather, the Sixteen was intended to elevate Cadillac into the rarefied realm of Packard, Peerless, and Pierce-Arrow, still the three giants of American motoring. That it did, offering superb luxury and smooth, effortless power with minimal shifting. Cadillac advertised the Sixteen’s performance as “a continuous flow…constantly at full-volume efficiency…flexible…instantly responsive.”
The Sixteen was only nine months old when Cadillac introduced another multicylinder engine, a 368-cubic-inch V-12. Essentially a V-16 with four fewer cylinders, it delivered 135 horsepower and 285 pound-feet of torque. The cars it powered also weren’t quite as large the Sixteens, riding the Cadillac Eight’s 140-inch wheelbase instead of an enormous 148-inch span.
Predictably, the Twelve also wasn’t as fast, but its free-revving engine was renowned for smooth, even power. And that power was quite ample. A roadster could do about 85 mph with standard rear-axle ratio, and most Twelves could cruise all day at 70. Of course, the Twelve was cheaper than the Sixteen, by far, offered with 11 body choices in the $3,795-$4,985 range.
But despite their refined performance and majestic proportions, the multicylinder Cadillacs were anachronisms in the devastated Depression market, and none sold in significant numbers. The peak was 1930-31 with exactly 3,250 Sixteens and 5,725 Twelves.
Production was only fair for ’32, then declined to about 700 and 400 units per year, respectively. Both models were dropped after 1937, but Cadillac made one more try starting the next year with an L-head V-16. At 431 cid and 185 horsepower, this engine was smaller and lighter yet more potent than the earlier overhead-valve design, but only 508 cars were so equipped through 1940, its final year.
There were two reasons why these grand Cadillacs fared so poorly. As noted, super-expensive cars with more than eight cylinders seemed socially inappropriate to many people in the early ’30s. After their initial sales spurt, these models were shunned by most customers for the cheaper, less showy, but by no means inferior Cadillac Eights.
Later, the big engines were simply outmoded by advancing technology. The introduction of precision-insert connecting-rod bearings helped eliminate knock and high-speed wear in engines with fewer than 12 cylinders, so there was little reason for Cadillac buyers to choose a Twelve or Sixteen over an Eight.
We’ll cover Cadillac’s V-8 offerings in more detail on the next page.

Sand Walking Exercises

Walking on the sand is great exercise and requires more exertion than walking on a hard surface. Tendons, ligaments and muscles all must work harder when walking in the sand because your foot sinks into the surface. If you overdo your barefoot walking on the sand, however

, you could get shin splints, painful tendons and sore feet. To avoid these injuries, strengthen the underused muscles to make walking on the sand easier.
Walking on the sand requires strong feet and calf muscles. Performing calf raises, either barefoot or in shoes, will strengthen your feet and calves. Stand on the edge of a step with the balls of your feet on the step, toes pointed straight forward and your heels hanging off. Go up onto your tippy toes as high as you can, pause and then slowly lower as far as you can, gently stretching your Achilles tendon. Work up to three sets of 10 to 15 repetitions. Variations include pointing the toes inward, outward and doing one leg at a time.
Walking lunges are a good all-around lower body strengthening exercise that also challenge your core and balance. The stronger your legs and core

, the easier it is to walk on the sand. One of the best ways to do lunges is to do them in the sand, either with or without shoes. Walking lunges are like an exaggerated type of walking, taking extra-long, deep strides. With your hands on your hips, take a long stride forward with your right leg and then bend your left knee and lower it to the sand. Straighten your left leg, bring it forward to meet the right leg and then take a long stride forward with the left leg. Bend the right knee and drop it to the sand. Doing lunges in the sand versus doing them on a hard surface allows for a deeper stride since you can safely hit the sand with the back knee without causing injury.
The yoga pose known as the ¡°tree pose¡± is great for strengthening your feet and your core as well as testing your balance. Shift all your weight to your right foot, grab your left foot and place your left heel against your right inner thigh as high as you can, so you are balancing on just one foot. Your pelvis and center of gravity should be directly above that foot. Hold your hands folded in front of you or straighten your arms and reach for the sky. Hold for 30 seconds to a minute and switch sides for the same amount of time. By standing on one leg, your feet, ankles and calves will be ready for a walk on the beach.
Runners train by running, cyclists train by cycling. So walking on the sand is a good way to prepare your body to walk on the sand. Walking slowly on the sand requires more effort than walking quickly or jogging, according to DiscoverWalking.com. The website states that ¡°walking in the sand requires 2.1 to 2.7 times more energy than walking on a hard surface¡± and ¡°jogging in sand uses 1.6 times more energy than jogging on hard surfaces.¡±

Do you suffer from fashion transference?

During my daughter¡¯s Music Together class, I looked around the room and noticed that not one mother (or grandmother, nanny or father) was better dressed than their child. One little girl had a funky wrap-style dress, matching socks, ballet flats and adorable matching barrettes in her hair. Her mother had on jeans and a wrinkly tee-shirt, like most of the parents present.
Erin Blakely, who¡¯s experienced similar dress comparisons in her child¡¯s music class, asks in her Babble.com essay “The Grit and the Glamour”: ¡°Why are we dressing our girls ¡ª who will spend the day running and jumping and splashing through puddles ¡ª for a night on the town, and ourselves for, well, a day at the playground?¡±
One reason Blakely gives is that the children¡¯s clothing, especially girls clothing, has became way mature. You can find UGG boots and SEVEN jeans for your toddler, not to mention suede pants and string bikinis. ¡°So dressing like mom has never been more possible

,¡± writes Blakely. ¡°Or rather, like mom would dress ¡ª if she wasn’t wearing sweatpants.¡±
I could not agree with her more. The clothing for little girls is IRRESISTABLE these days. And if you¡¯re shopping at Target, inexpensive as well (not so much at Oilily, my mom¡¯s favorite store). How could I say no to a $4 halter top and a $6 jean mini-skirt? I almost feel bad for my friends who have boys.
And the truth is — I never thought I¡¯d be this into dressing my daughter. I tried to steer clear of all the pink out there, but realized it¡¯s almost impossible. I will never, I had thought, dress my daughter to look older than her age. But, when my sister sent me a box of her daughter¡¯s clothing and there was a black faux leather mini-skirt – I could not resist! For Christmas last year she wore a pink cashmere sweater, the skirt, black tights and black shoes (all hand-me downs) – and several people who saw photos of this outfit commented that it looked like something I¡¯d wear, but with boots. Or rather, an outfit I would wear before? her.
So maybe a leather skirt was a little advanced for a two-year old, but truth is¡ that¡¯s how toddlers dress these days.
Ok, so we moms are dressing our daughters like we¡¯d like to dress – or how we used to dress before we had them

. But will we ever return to our dressing glory days? Blakely offers one explanation of why we¡¯ve comfortably settled into dressing like we did in college: ¡°While kids’ fashion has matured, adult styles have regressed, as schlubby adult clothing has moved out of our closets and into the realm of socially acceptable streetwear. Blue jeans and T-shirts have become allowable in all but the most conservative of workplaces.¡±
Granted there are practical reasons fordressing down when you¡¯re hanging with your kids. My daughter¡¯s maple syrup handprint on my jeans this morning is one. But does that justify my scraggly hair and scuffed clogs?
Blakely puts it so well: ¡°I shudder at the thought of giving up my beat-up running sneakers and track pants. But perhaps a swipe of the mascara brush and a pair of dress flats might not be the worst thing in the world. Because if we continue to abdicate the part of ourselves that we lose in parenting ¡ª the free time to groom ourselves, to dress ourselves, to care as much about our own appearance as we do about that of our children ¡ª will we be able to get it back? Is there any guarantee, when our kids are older and dressing themselves, that we will return to the women we used to be?¡±
I used to be more fashionable¡when I lived in New York and worked in an office. Maybe I should try to add a little New York to my wardrobe and less Colorado?
Do you dress your child better than yourself?

Does size matter?

What Kind of Pedals Are on Most Stationary Bikes?

The first stationary bikes created specifically for the original indoor cycling program were an innovation of Johnny Goldberg, a South African endurance racer in search of a more effective way for cyclists to train inside. Consequently, the geometry of indoor cycling bikes is similar to that of road bikes. Stationary bikes feature drive trains with bike chains, weighted flywheels and dual-sided pedals.
Early stationary bikes manufactured by Schwinn came standard with platform pedals that had toe clips on one side. Toe clips, or toe cages, are hard plastic toe box cages bolted to the pedal. They have adjustable nylon straps so that you can tighten them to keep your feet, for the most part, in the same place on the pedals as you ride. On these bikes, whether you wear gym shoes or cycling shoes, you must use the toe clips to stay connected to the pedals. Schwinn stationary bikes that say ¡°Johnny G¡± down the side of the frame have these pedals unless the fitness facility has changed them out over time.
When the company Star Trac started making the bikes, it implemented a new standard pedal system, which is what you¡¯ll find in most indoor cycling facilities. These dual-sided platform pedals have the same toe clips with adjustable straps on one side as their Schwinn predecessors, in addition to SPD-compatible clips on the other side. SPD, or Shimano Pedal Design, is the most widely used clipless pedal system. The system’s clips accommodate SPD cleats. Dual-sided pedals provide riders with cycling shoes or gym shoes with a means to properly attach to the pedal.
In studios frequented by a significant number of serious cyclists or fitness riders who wear only cycling shoes, a small number of bikes might have fully clipless pedals. This usually happens in larger studios with between 30 and 50 bikes, and typically no more than 10 percent of bikes have full SPD clipless pedals, with clips on both sides

. The main advantage for the rider is that clipless pedals are small ¡ª they¡¯re situated directly under the ball of the foot and, unlike platform pedals with clips, don¡¯t touch the toes or arch of the foot. Smaller pedals translate to increased foot comfort on the bike.
Dual-sided pedals with toe cages and SPD clips are the most prevalent style of pedal, simply because many stationary bikes come with them, but your fitness facility might have a different setup. Some studios have Look pedals, the clipless system road cyclists most often choose. The Look system is not SPD-compatible and its existence in the indoor cycling studio is rare. Facility managers normally advise cyclists who use the Look system on their own bikes to buy a specific pair of shoes for indoor cycling and install SPD cleats. Call your facility in advance to find out how many bikes are in the studio and what pedal systems they have.
